Lupinus albus
In Brazilian botecos, a small plate placed next to a bowl of lupines gives away how much of it has already been eaten by the height of the piled shells. A light pinch on one side is enough to slip this yellowish seed out of its sandy skin. A member of the legume family, this plant’s seed should be cooked before consumption. It is sold preserved in brine, and can be added to salads or eaten on its own.
