Scyllarides brasiliensis
Also known in Portuguese as lagosta-sapateira, this crustacean found in almost all the Brazilian coast, from Maranhão to Santa Catarina, tastes like its famous “cousin”, the lobster. The soft and tender, white meat can be enjoyed grilled, roasted or fried, and goes well with ingredients like nutmeg, coconut milk and butter, among others. The secret is to not let it overcook. Similarly to lobster, it gets tough if cooked for longer than needed. Fresh Brazilian slipper lobster is available between August and December, when fishing is permitted.
