Fragaria x ananassa Duch.
Ice creams, juices, cakes, pies, candies, jams, mousses, yogurts… the applications of this heart-shaped red berry in confectionery and pastry are limitless. It can be used to decorate desserts or be the main attraction in preparations such as pavlova − strawberry served with whipped cream and crispy meringue. The fruit also features as an ingredient in salads, sauces and risottos. The slightly acidic flavor goes well in hot, cold, sweet and savory dishes, as well as in soft drinks, cocktails (such as caipirinha), and liqueurs. A source of vitamins, potassium, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and antioxidants, strawberry strengthens the immune system, has anti-inflammatory action, and healing properties. Grown in the Southeast and South regions of Brazil, it can be found in markets almost year round, but the best are harvested in July and August.
