Citrus deliciosa Tenore
BERGAMOTA IS THE word used, in Southern Brazil, to designate the fruit that in other parts of the country can be called a tangerina or mexerica. Very sweet, juicy and easy to peel, montenegrina mandarin appeared by a spontaneous mutation, discovered in 1940 in the area that makes up the Vale do Caí, in Rio Grande do Sul. I can be eaten fresh, and also used in juices, sauces, and other food preparations. Unlike other varieties, the fruit harvest in Brazil is delayed until September or October. Montenegrina mandarin was included in Arca do Gosto (Ark of Taste), a Slow Food movement to popularize ingredients in danger of extinction.
